Billy Goat Hill Habitat Enhancement

Box woodland vegetation communities are some of the most threatened ecosystems in Australia with the remaining patches often highly degraded due to weed invasion, salinity, soil erosion and over-grazing. Mid Lachlan Landcare is currently raising awareness about conserving patches of remnant woodland vegetation, in particular a white box (Eucalyptus albens) vegetation community located within Billy Goat Hill Cowra.

Mid Lachlan Landcare has recently partnered with Cowra Shire Council and with support from Local Land Services and Cowra Woodland Bird Program has been re-establishing the Box Gum Grassy Woodland Community at Billy Goat Hill conducting planting of native tube stock within selected areas within the Reserve. Mid Lachlan Landcare is seeking to further improve the ecological health of the site by undertaking control of woody weeds and planting.

The restoration will contribute to the long-term management of the area by improving biodiversity, reducing vegetation decline and building ecosystem resilience. The site is ideally suited to restoration given that the surrounding area has a number of environmental assets including mature box eucalypt trees, granite outcrops and nearby areas of established revegetation.
